They tested against opossum kidney cells (a common set of cells for research at the time) and it seemed to shut off Adenylyl cyclase by how it acts on serotonin receptors. Finding suggest it's an agonist for that receptor (which I think is how it makes my nose run/produce mucus).

I don't know what Adenylyl cyclase is, but if Affrin acts on serotonin it's fascinating. I'm expecting I have many mutations associated with serotonin in epithelial cells.
