I'll hazard a try via example: HH GPS devices *converged* w phones in smartphones. Smartphones use the internet but didn't *converge* with it. However *combination* of the two is what allows Uber to come into existence.

Yeah, you're both right. Al Ries' book on positioning has a discussion of this. People keep looking at examples like "clock+radio=clock radio" in isolation and missing the larger mixing, matching and combinatorial divergence process going on
