Not seeing the faults of your friends seems to be part of reciprocal altruism programming
I have specific examples in mind where they are clearly real friends, and one refuses to believe or even hear negative things about the other, turning around and attacking the accuser of lying etc

Do you think they believe it? Or feel the duty to defend?

For some it's an overt duty thing, but that kind of raw tribalism is not as common as the subtle kind. When it goes overt, usually there is also active complicity.
