Pondering a possible definition of art A work is art in proportion to the unpredictability of the locus of its maximal perceived value. If you know exactly who will appreciate it the most it is weak art.

Best I can figure, something is art if the person who made it intended to create art. Nobody else's opinion matters.

Nah, that's in a sense a bit of a cowardly definition. While there is subjectivity, interesting definitions allow for external failures.

The point of defining art at all is to have insightful debates and draw interesting conclusions. Definitions that merely identify/defend/entitle some behaviors as art might as well be left unstated. Just do the thing.

You can debate and awful lot of different things, like aesthetics, influences, narrative, longevity, dollar value, etc without debating whether or not something "is art".
