What are some examples of people making sacrifices lower on the Maslow hierarchy (food, safety etc) to gain things higher up (love, belonging, self-actualization)?
We've overused the stale go-hungry-for-TV example.

not necessarily, that could be NPV rational (long-term higher safety). Extreme sports are a better example.

well, the history of the world is chock-a-block with willful martyrs who traded safety directly for higher mission. hard to prove their motivations were purely higher than the lowest row, but hard to argue that they weren't at least in part.
