not sure if related, but I finally made my peace with the bullshitty nature of conscription in NS when somebody put it to me that it was really more of "idling the engine" for the overall system than to actually prepare 18yo boys for actual war

Well technically, conscription is unbounded drafting for war. Time-bound mandatory service is more like an element of education system that has different roles in war/peace.

Depends on the split between sociopaths, the clueless, and the losers in a given society. Given that the clueless are at best net zero contributors, and losers do just enough to placate sociopaths, the slack in a postindustrial economy is probably close to 90%.
