this great tweet confirms my views and makes me feel less need to do any thinking of my own

One basic function of a "public intellectual" like Chait (or Brooks, who masters this) is to gesture at thinking (about equivalences, hypotheticals, etc.) precisely so comfortable readers, whose views they confirm, feel diminished pressure to do any thinking of their own.

Thinking is like muscle building. It only actually happens against resistance. If default thought patterns (which are like unloaded movements) aren't being stressed, what's happening is a sort of ruminative resonance. The cognitive analog of empathy.
