If the shared car-cloud model becomes dominant though, I suspect utilization will be higher for cars than either trains or buses, with net lower $ and carbon per passenger-mile...https://twitter.com/mateosfo/status/931981951975677952 …

I am becoming convinced that autonomous vehicles are designed to solve the problem of "I live in a wealthy suburb but have a horrible car commute and don't want to drive anymore but also hate trains and buses."

There is no evidence to support this claim and abundant evidence to refute it.

There have been concept studies for high-density AV highway systems with platooning fleets since the 90s. It's not something that can be proved or dismissed at this stage. But if you're closed to possibility there's nothing more to say. There's sincere people working the angle.

I am referring specifically to studies that show the benefits will not occur unless specific external conditions are met. The benefits are not an inherent quality of the technology.

I meant everything I said in the thread. If AV boosters are sincere about achieving the full benefits, then please join us at city hall. I can send you the meeting schedules.

But throwing theoretical studies into the air while ignoring the physical and political realities is a cop-out. Join us in doing the work required to achieve what you say you want, or expect severe skepticism.

I think you'll find that your skepticism primarily has locally retardant effects. Those you call "AV boosters" simply go to the friendliest environments. Countering skepticism on hostile turf is not worth it until much later in the game.

I see. So, politics is yucky and therefore technology only goes where it doesn't have to try. Is this truly how AV folks think about urban problems?
