Consulting is a great Plan B but a terrible Plan A. The healthiest way to enter consulting as a calling is by crashing comically (but not tragically or ignominously) out of a Plan A.
Tragic failure makes you poisonous to others' efforts even if you sincerely intend to help.

So I've actually seen this happen in the auto industry in Detroit. It's hilarious the difference between those who will make it as consultants after and those who burn out. Can almost always tell before they leave.
