I am becoming convinced that autonomous vehicles are designed to solve the problem of "I live in a wealthy suburb but have a horrible car commute and don't want to drive anymore but also hate trains and buses."

There have been concept studies for high-density AV highway systems with platooning fleets since the 90s. It's not something that can be proved or dismissed at this stage. But if you're closed to possibility there's nothing more to say. There's sincere people working the angle.

How does one live in the Bay Area and have the view that commuting from suburbs into a city is only for wealthy? Or do only the wealthy prefer private cars vs. public transit? Pretty sure everyone does, matter of cost, not preference.

Not sure if relevant because non-US: In SG, I take trains and buses every day, to get to work and to get home. I hate it. Worst 2 hours of my day, every day. I can't wait for driverless cars. I happily paid $5 for tedious UberPool trips because I could sit comfortably to and fro
