Hindus: do you really say “oh my gods” I have never heard the plural from people in English.

Hmm. I've heard "devere" rather than "devaru" in Kannada, and I think that's ambiguously coul-be-plural? Though strict plural=devaragulu

The strict comparison should be to Angels though, as in "Angels in heaven!"... Christianity is not so much monotheistic as dictatorial
