Are there stable and meaningful intermediate positions between "nurture" and "exploit" in a power-asymmetric relationship? Or is it binary?

I think there can be partnerships inbetween. As a pilot, I gave my crew the power to assume command anytime they had best info

Without an externality it's binary. I can draw a longer line next to the long line.

I think there are in very specific cases (parent-child), but it's very hard to get to that intermediate place.

Sometimes “wait until they’re ready” is short-term viable

Mentoring is basically, <nurture now, exploit later.>

I'm not confident it's of utility to put these on the same continuum.
Both terms are also committed to a particular sense.
One can gain from an interaction without it being exploitation. One can nurture things not beneficial.

It depends upon which dimensions you measure power with. Work vs play, for instance. Friends can co-op, with each being the master at times.

I would suggest "questioning" (the gentler form of "challenging"). Especially if allowed and responded to by those in power.
