Think about it: typefaces replacing calligraphy was an early example of minimalist/lean design replacing rich/fat design. Now phone icons.

Yes I can. There were schools/styles. Single-use executions are the logical limit of bespoke design.

It's a bit of a stretch, but ok. Movable Type was some kind of early technology (technology ➜ design). But calligraphy definitely wasn't.
