Nope. No way to fake a deadline. Like setting your watch 10 mins fast to be on time ... you can't fool yourself.

To force myself to act as-if there's a deadline, I have to commit my evenings and sleep (willing to work past midnight, til ~2am)

Might have to make a promise to someone whose opinion matters. Kills some of the autonomy, but might do the trick in a pinch.

I personally wouldn't use this trick more than once a month, or you might kill one of the compensatory benefits of self-employment.
