Art history q: was rise of impressionism related to the general sense of time speeding up so you had to capture fleeting impressions?
Manet etc were what.... 1860s? Contemporaneous with railroad boom which was I think bigger acceleration spectacle than Internet today

no yeah it's definitely relevant. it's more that (correctly or not) i think of modernism as having to do with "everything happening at once"

due to the combination of world war + industrial rev + upheaval in social roles. but you're right that it started in the 19th c.
