Is it normal in currency markets for sell side to be smaller lots than buy side? ie do buyers buy in bulk while sellers sell in trickles?

In general market-makers prefer small lots so they can adjust prices, while price-takers want large lots so they can move volume.

So it depends on whether buyers/sellers are makers/takers. Also note that buy/sell distinction is meaningless in FX because symmetrical.

Is it symmetrical though? Doesn't the less liquid currency act more like a de facto non-currency asset?

"Less liquid" is misleading. FX volume >>> crypto volume. Even smallest currencies are active enough for trades to be symmetrical.
