Both I think. They find it to be not just wrong by their experience but offensively so.
I get the same reaction. Mostly viewed as "elitist" and "inhumane" at least the way I frame it.

One reason may be that divergentism seems to conflict with an idea of social progress, that we will come to consensus on the "correct" view.
