Trust doesn't necessarily go away in bad times--it just becomes parochial. Lowered generalized trust, increased particularized trust.

Yup precisely, but arguably, particularization is a kind of net devaluation.

I'm with you. All the nice social consequences of trust come from broad trust in others/institutions, not narrow trust in close-knit cliques
