Interestingly a writer's writer and an editor are not the same thing (though they can be). Just like a player's player versus a coach. Hmm 
I don't know about all sports, but in cricket for example, the best coaches usually had average playing careers...

coaching is strategy, motivation, team performance, etc. Craftsmanship is individual talent and pursuit of excellence.

So coaches never push the envelope? Seek to do something different that furthers the sport and their team?

While a good writer can exist without an editor, rarely do we see that a great player exists without a coach/trainer.

very true. Genius of any craft likely to be a craftsman in the arena pushing the envelope. Coaching is different skill.
