Export Markdown from Docs (via add-on https://github.com/lmmx/gdocs2md-html …) then use MD in WP (via plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=markdown …).

sometimes I copy into medium and then copy from medium to WordPress but that introduces some other nonsense too

I believe you can download a doc as HTML, then paste the relevant source into WP. You might have to do styling work though.

Oh, you need to lose spans and divs. Not sure what the download looks like. But spans and divs are part of styling.
