It's protocol underlying ethernet. You transmit a packet without checking to see if line is in use, detect collisions

Older protocols passed "tokens" around to determine which node could transmit, like a talking stick.

Ethernet is like when people all try to talk at once, and shut up if there's collision, and try again a little later.

yes, it's more efficient under "normal" statistical conditions. Under unusual traffic conditions it can be worse
