Prepping the blogging course is a bit of an intimidating challenge though I've been doing it for 9 years

Realization in last week: just how many diverse blogging styles have evolved; how different the medium is from old media when handled well

Besides internal ribbonfarm evolution, I've unconsciously learned/incorporated quite a bit from Cracked, Steve Yegge, Zenpundit among others

There's a reason blogging seems harder to break into in 2016 even though tech is far better than in 2007: it is no longer a pristine medium

In 2007, blogging was like homesteading. You had a patch of untamed land, you did whatever. "Ribbonfarm" is named for this condition.

In 2016, we are no longer in pristine state formation times, but competitive state formation times. You have to disrupt existing blogosphere

You can disrupt in a business sense by operating on the margins of a niche like "travel", serving underserved audience but this is weaksauce

If you *really* want to disrupt you have to do so *stylistically*... incumbents use gravitas-voice? Use emoji and cursing and animated gifs

The reason aggregation things like Medium with promises of "readymade distribution" (

If you can't beat incumbents with a differentiated style, you go for "aggregated commodity". Hence the low stylistic diversity on Medium

Not to pick on Medium, but be careful of defaulting to it. You may think you're there for ease of platform and "free" distro but TAINTAAFL

Ease of use means it's easier to fall into stylistic imitation. You may find yourself writing confessional genre posts without meaning to.

'Free' district only really works if your posts fit the stylistic grooves of the system (LJ, tumblr have such grooves too, not just medium)
