i think twitter is safe. 99% of twitter use don't know what slack is.

not sure, at least for me the appeal of twitter is quite different from IRC done right.

asymmetric follower relationship and replaying to day old tweets being natural is IMO crucial.

I doubt it. Slack had too much cognitive overhead for the unwashed masses. It's not really catching on even among techies in India
