Why should Trump going down drag down GOP down ballot? Might it not have reverse effect as conservative voters go for consolation prizes?

In normal times, high split-ticket % would be weird, but we're way post-normal. Why wouldn't people vote not-Trump for POTUS, GOP for rest?

my thinking exactly. Long history of split-ticket voting to "keep gov in check," w/ prez from one party and congress from another

i guess the idea is pres candidate serves as figurehead of party; if a bad figurehead, ppl lose passion for party/voting in general

No bc Trump's set himself apart from the GOP, so ppl will vote for him & not anyone else on the ballot (I've heard).
