I suspect one reason I'm getting into fiction is that it's a creative mode that can tolerate much lower read-to-write throughput levels

How about audiobooks? They're considered the lazy mans paperback. Also take up less space than your bookshelf.

. audiobooks are awful for random-access (=real) reading. They exist for constraints like commuting, cooking, esp for fiction
Really great for the Autobahn at 200 kph.
