there's a Tolstoy story based on that premise: a woman who goes to deathbed and back, and falls in/out of love with doctor

right and there's Ivan Ilyitch. Tolstoy believed in spiritual value of illness. But La Rochefoucauld anticipated him by centuries. 🙂
