When they were current (1800s?) did the words 'fop' and 'dandy' have gay connotations or were they ~ metrosexual today?

In your view, do they have such connotations today? (I'm reading this implication in your question, but not sure...)

Fop was originall a fool in Shakespeare's time. Pretty sure that's the etymology. Then fashion-obsessed, then superficial, then gay.

Dandy is used. A man who is consistently well dressed, well mannered and slightly flashy. I wish I had the energy & smarts to be one.
