I was more thinking of Hawking's discussion of the hypothetical singularity at the Big Bang.

Hawking (at least at one point) wanted to disprove a Big Bang singularity so that the universe wouldn't have "begun", thus no creator.

back then there was a basic face off between Big Bang and steady state (Hoyle) theories of expanding universe
