Can somebody enlighten me about the psychology/incentives of role-playing? What exactly do you get out of pretending to be Batman, say?

Beyond that: Acting exercise. Dissociated therapy, sometimes. Intense collaborative storytelling. Raw and personalized narrative play.

Some of those are only with a VERY good group with lots of trust. Not what you'll see at your local school's D&D club. cc

I suspect the high water mark of group trust I've experienced is your low water mark 😄

Probably! We got about as raw as I'd be willing to get. Result was incredible but uniquely non-scaling storytelling.
