Once, animals could be tried, punished for "crimes" by some of our more moronic ancestors. Likely rationalized as "honoring" them.

@vgr@GabrielDuquette Jewish kosher laws are probably at least somewhat about animal cruelty. Genesis portrays early humans as vegetarian. -
@vgr@GabrielDuquette In fact, in Genesis it takes a special act of God to allow eating meat. Possibly necessitated by changing environment.
