"Steep" learning curve ==> short+difficult, but "long" learning curve ==> long+easy. Incoherent graph=hill metaphor. Reality=long+hard.
The "learning curves are hills" metaphor may have to be given up entirely because there's no way to make the semantics work with x=t.
