Why isn't IRA contribution limit 18k+5.5k=23.5k for self-employed to match IRA+401(k) limit of paycheckers? Anti-small-biz laws annoy me. 😡

If you don't have salaried employees, you might want to check out a solo 401K. It's an option I'm contemplating.

small businesses can do things like SEP-IRAs, which allow up to 25% of income to be contributed, up to $50k; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEP-IRA

you can do stealth Roth. Where you put away money in a non deductible traditional IRA , then reclassify it and pay the tax.
