Transhumanists are imagined as bionic beings with lots of electronic gear added. Dematerialists are minimalist pod people+virtual avatars.

The trend is exaggerated in media. Most people's body-image issues are not severe enough to seek surgery, VR or no VR

I very much doubt it. I suspect 3D avatars to date have been dissociated fantasies for the most part.
Barbie effect requires an ideal of perfection that is validated by social proof. You can't be your own ideal I think.
