4/ It avoids the "old member tax" effect of a $0-at-signup fixed fee (since you can join late and get old content for free)

5/ It avoids the problem of "content stuffing" where you post crap just to justify monthly fee. If you publish nothing one month, no charge.

That might be a nice little twist, but you'd need to train teh users on the base model first

Hmm... you're running with it in a different direction. I prefer a simpler model: you can quit anytime without feeling cheated.

Yeah. Being forced to choose between one-time fee vs fixed subscription is basically book vs. magazine thinking ported online

Matter of taste. I prefer not to simplify. I'd say, "You get charged based on the new content posted, and no more than $10/mo"
