why not categorize by sustaining innovation versus disruptive? You seem to be excluding sustaining.

Yes. I increasingly think adj "sustaining" doesn't deserve noun "innovation." It's filling in details of past disruptive innovation

for tech disruption, by definition, incumbents find it difficult / impossible to adapt, end up losing market.

if not- if incumbents can adopt new practices, then maybe things not on your list are not really innovations - just minor improvements.
