Possibly Ill-posed q: if you compute a block that ends up not being on the longest chain, is the bitcoin you earn still valid?

It's not. Otherwise there would be no way to achieve consensus.

Transactions aren't valid until they're included in a block in the longest chain, so you'd just end up with a worthless private fork.
