A character's name is half the story in fiction. Writing characters in non-native settings is basically same challenge as science fiction

Really? Non-native is limited by understanding of other culture; SF is hypothetical based on premise created by author.

non-native to *audience* not author. Just struck me that failed foreign characters fail in same way as poorly conceived aliens.

names in GoT are masterful. Different but not too different. eg Samwell (Samuel) Eddard (Edward) etc -- gives audience terra firma
