PhD is very valuable as bought time to dive deep, develop thinking. But not highest-leverage impact vector for most fields.

- For me, it's about intrinsic motivation and forced cross-cultural experience. Stops me turning into an untethered 'sage on a stage.'

I included MS in my count. I finished in 3.5 years for PhD proper.

- Both of my dept. affiliations have no undergraduate students, and get most of their income from consultancy, government, policy work.
