people don't realize that in the sense of paychecks, machines *created* most jobs >1750s. Before there was just work

Yeah, but "work" survives more robustly than "jobs." Work : jobs :: eating : eating out at restaurants.

A bit deeper, since jobs more arbitrary than cars. W/o jobs, impersonal currencies may be less central to life.
