I learned BASIC, C, FORTRAN (but hated 'em). Finally found home in Matlab. Today I'd point a newb to Processing or Javascript I think. (2/3)

That's probably because you wanted to do math. If you were doing web pages, you would have liked JavaScript.

like many pre-web beginners I'd already lost interest in coding for sake of coding by the time JavaScript became an option.

oh boy only thing I ever learned -- and barely -- was Pascal (Borland). In highschool. Old skool!

Python has been that go-to for me for ages. It's messier, but once you're up the learning curve, squeak is even better for exploratory.
