The fediverse is island-like mastodon servers that "peer" as local admins decide. Unlike twitter, there's no underlying global graph and namespace. Depending on how admins set up a server, you see different views of non-local activity.

What is one example of "non-local activity"? I thought on Mastodon, as it is here on Twitter, you would only look at your timeline, which consists of accounts you follow? And you could follow accounts from anywhere, so long as their instance isn't banned from yours?
