Yes I'm coming around to that. But I also think it's unclear whether Twitter could stay being a nice thing anyway. The pandemic peak passed and Jack left and they started adding more features. Elon's just doing the speed run of what was happening anyway
The biz model was definitely in trouble even though the product was improving for median users. So yeah, something would have happened. This is just one of the worse things that could have. Landing in the hands of a culture war 800lb gorilla with $30/share worth of buyers regret.
yeah it does seem like he's thrashing about. But money and power can get you a lot of luck surface area. watch him bring back Vine right when they ban TikTok..
I think his social product instincts are bad enough his legendary luck from hard-tech industries may run out. But being a TikTok substitute is a *really* hard/big pivot that means rebuilding the whole market from scratch since the twitter user base is not the same as tiktok.
I think he doesn't quite appreciate the extent to which his apparent social success is entirely a function of his ability to create spectacles out of actual rocket launches. Not his very mediocre memes and jokes.
My humanist side wants to bet on greatness and say he will at least get some great people around him. But This would have been my argument for Kanye one year ago so I am trying to temper it.
