Good subtlety here. If you are an NYT reporter or an academic epidemiologist the bluecheck is about protecting others from impersonators trying to spread disinfo by borrowing your *external* credibility. If bluecheck itself is your only credential you’re not worth impersonating.

The original bluecheck had no robust identify verification. Once you had it, you could change your bio to “Fifth King of England” and retain the checkmark. Several people changed their name and profile to Elon Musk’s and ran crypto scams in his replies.

Didn’t even need that. Just needed to lose bluecheck on name or picture edit until reverified. If verified as Steve Stevens why should you be able to change your name to Bob Roberts bluecheck?
