Gave up for now. I miss the refactorcamp mastodon, and I have a backup of it and a server subscription that I'm not using. My life got a lot more complicated so I haven't had time and energy to start it on the new server.

It does seem to have its own vibe and affordances, and be something distinct from twitter, email, blogs. I liked it. It isn't a direct replacement for twitter though, although that is how it is sometimes pitched. Discoverability is different, for one thing.

There were about 50 active users, and 1000 inactive users. I could prune, but I kind of liked having the inactive users around because the accounts they followed showed up in the instance feed, and allowed more discoverability of the wider fediverse.
