I actually heard a guy literally say something like this about a complex product in a meeting once. I thought it was a joke trope but there is a kind of bad engineer who is really this badly miscalibrating on assessing projects.

Except guys who say things like this typically don’t do anything besides saying things like this. 😆 Guy I’m thinking of was mid 30s at the time, 12 years ago, and had done nothing significant. Has gone on to continue doing nothing significant since.

True. But, terribly estimating project difficulty is the source of all innovation. We'd never do anything if we knew beforehand how hard it was.

I think this happens a lot in software because equivalent of paper planes and airliners can look similar. It really would take only a weekend to create a “twitter paper plane.” Like a CRUD web app that adds posts to a stream. Even an “RC toy plane” that handles nontrivial load.
