The Mughals held court in 2 forms, derived from Persian imperial culture: Diwan-i-khaas (hall of private audiences) Diwan-i-aam (hall of commoner audiences) I think in western imperial culture, the 2 tended to be conflated. Just trying to expand conceptual vocabulary here 😇

I have a 2-year old draft post about how medieval Islamic court cultures went beyond European political life with this sort of thing. Might be time to finish it and post, now that twitter has become Shah Elon’s diwan-i-aam.

Curious why that is. Until modern times all major world societies believed in objective, even ontological, differences between the exalted and the common, the sacred and profance, and you'd think that would carry over to engagements by the sovereign with the non-sovereign.
