People in nonprofit fundraising — why do people name things in extremely cumbersome ways? Why “John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation” when you know everyone will just call it MacArthur foundation? Same with politics. Ridiculously unusable names.

well, once you know everyone'll use short name in all but a few formal contexts, isn't the long official name a free extra channel for more message? being recognized by many variant names is also a signal of endurance/breadth/power. …
