We now have n=2 data points on people with monarchic tendencies acquiring pseudo-public platforms and aspiring to turn them into royal courts of sorts. One more and we’ll have an NYT trend. Two more and a working theory, and we’ll have an actual trend 🤔

This is new. People like Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey and other less-known founders created platforms from nothing, which seems like mere tech entrepreneurship. but acquiring an existing platform (even a borderline joke one) seems like monarchical politics rather than M&A.

Hughes bought The New Republic. Bezos bought The Washington Post. Benioff has Time. Tech has been acquiring its way into these public platforms for a while now.
