Thinking about how peak premium mediocre circa 2016 had a jewel-like aesthetic. Everything reduced to shiniest, most flat-faceted, packaged look possible. Like the Industrial Age was trying to turn the whole planet into a jewel in the endgame. Got to 99% and crashed.

Now everything is unboxed and has an exposed-innards unpresented look. The packaging trash is everywhere, figuratively speaking. iPhone unboxing was the ironic peak. A jewel within a jewel designed to access (and photograph) the whole jewel.

The “working in public” and cozyweb trends were the beginnings of post-industrial world UX. Opposite of jewel like.

The jewel aspect hit me visiting the recently added extension at Changi airport literally called Jewel and designed to look like a literal jewel. Max over the top on the nose premium mediocre as only Singapore can pull off. I finally understood the essence.
