Is it just me or is this year full of what seem like unnecessary events? Like not even unforced errors, just shit that seem to have no upside for the people doing it?
Putin invading Ukraine
Trump hoarding documents
Musk buying twitter
It’s a Cipolla stupidity year
“A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.”
There’s been other smaller stuff, but throughout the year I’ve found myself going
“Whyyyy? What possible upside do you see here? And it’s acboring and painful shitshow to boot that can’t even be entertaining”
Theory. The future has gotten so overdetermined in the last few years, with so many forced moves, high agency addicts got frustrated and flailed in an attempt to feel any sort of alive.
Agency is a kind of addiction that makes waiting for meaningful options seem like hell
Elon buying twitter upside: possibly to reshape the “digital commons”, or more positively influence collective discourse and reduce cancelling, shadow-banning, etc.
